Abstract Navike u primjeni oralne higijene imaju značajan utjecaj na oralno zdravlje čovjeka. Ovim istraživanjem oralnohigijenskih navika seoske sredine želimo doprinijeti unaprjeđenju svjesnosti brige o oralnom zdravlju, važnosti programa prevencije karijesa i potrebe za oralnim higijeničarom u ordinacijama dentalne medicine.
Abstract (english) Maintaining oral hygiene has a significant influence on oral health. As such, oral hygiene is often neglected due to insufficient education, motivation and various other socio-cultural factors. The purpose of this study is to collect data on oral health status, oral hygiene habits, influence of oral health education and motivation of the rural community patients and to establish the correlation between oral hygiene habits, the health of the patient’s teeth and socioeconomic factors. The high number of dental caries and periodontal diseases indicate the need for this kind of research. Dental caries and periodontal diseases are mostly health-related illnesses and the proper oral hygiene ensures decrease in both. Although a great number of people know what proper oral hygiene implies, there is a vast difference in what they actually do. The obtained results indicate that more than half of the survey respondents are satisfied with their oral health, which is assessed in accordance with the objective status determined by an examination. In addition, the results further indicate that the survey respondents have relatively good oral health care habits since more than a half of them are non-smokers (66%), most of them have one or no sweet snack per day (69%), slightly less than a half of them visit their dentists to have tartar removed 46%). However, given the fact that more than half of them (52%) said that they brush their teeth only once a day, 49% twice daily, and only a some of them (14%) brush their teeth three times a day or after each meal (24% ), that only around half of them use additional hygienic products such as dental floss and mouthwash, and only a few of them stated that their dental examinations occur regularly, we can conclude that although oral healthcare habits are satisfactory, there is still a great need to improve aforementioned through various public health education programs that would increase the awareness, motivation and level of general oral health in Croatia. Through this research of oral hygiene habits, we want to contribute to the improvement of oral health care awareness of the rural community, the importance of a dental caries prevention program and the need for oral hygiene officers in dental medicine.
