Abstract

Pojam dentalnog straha odnosi se na normalnu, ali neugodnu emocionalnu reakciju na
dentalni stimulus koji pojedinac smatra prijetećim. Za razliku od straha, dentalna anksioznost stanje
je zabrinutosti koje prelazi u osjećaj gubitka kontrole, a očituje se nerazumnom i preuveličanom
emocionalnom reakcijom za koju okidač ne mora nužno biti objekt već i same misli pojedinca.
Dentalni strah i anksioznost (DSA) s prevalencijom od 9 % u sklopu dječje dentalne medicine
predstavlja velik izazov za svakog doktora koji se susreće s pacijentima te dobi. Zadatak je doktora
dentalne medicine da zna procijeniti je li iskazana reakcija strah od novog i nepoznatog (normalna
emocionalna reakcija za djecu), radi li se o trenutnom anksioznom odgovoru na dentalni stimulus
ili je pak u pitanju psihijatrijski poremećaj, tj. generalizirana anksioznost. Kako bi se olakšala
dentalna njega nesuradljivih pacijenata, doktoru je važno prepoznati povezanost između
proučavanih parametara i pojavnosti DSA-a u djece/adolescenata.
Svrha je ovog rada bila istražiti postojeću literaturu na temu dentalnog straha i anksioznosti
u djece i adolescenata, analizirati i usporediti svrhu i rezultate pronađenih istraživanja te
prevalenciju DSA-a i međuzavisnost parametara na koje on, ali i koji na njega mogu utjecati.
Stručna je literatura pretražena online, na stranici PubMed® Medline, gdje je od početnih 654
radova s temom dental fear and anxiety among children and adolescents ručnim probirom na
temelju analize sažetaka te parametara ovisno o kojima je DSA proučavan, odabrano 10 radova.
Istraživanja izvan područja Europske Unije, koja nisu objavljena na engleskom jeziku i ona
neodgovarajuće tematike isključena su iz analize.
Na temelju ove sustavne analize daje se zaključiti da prevalencija DSA-a varira između 2,1
% i 12,1 % u spomenutom uzorku populacije. Dobiveni se rezultati odnose isključivo na radove
koji proučavaju DSA na uzorku djece i adolescenata (dob 3 – 12 godina) iz Europske Unije, od
2014. godine do danas.

Abstract (english)

The term dental fear means normal but unpleasant emotional reaction to dental stimuli that a
person considers to be threatening. Dental anxiety is a condition of concern that turns into a fear of
losing control and it manifests itself by enlarged emotional reaction that does not need to be
triggered by an object but only by person’s thoughts. Dental fear and anxiety (DFA) with a
prevalence of 9% in pedodontics presents a big challenge for every doctor that treats patients of
this age. The task for a doctor of dental medicine is to know how to distinguish if the reaction is a
fear of new and unknown, if it is momentary anxious response on dental stimuli or manifestation
of general anxiety disorder. In order to improve dental care of uncooperative patients, it is
important to recognize the relationship between studied parameters and prevalence of DFA in
children/adolescents.
The main purpose of this paper is to analyze existing literature on dental fear and anxiety in
children and adolescents and to analyze and compare goals and results of observed papers,
prevalence of DFA and relationship between parameters that are influencing, or being influenced
by DFA.
Published research papers were searched online, via PubMed® Medline. Initially, there were
654 papers on subject of “dental fear and anxiety among children and adolescents”. Finally, 10
papers were selected by analyzing the summaries and parameters in relation to which DFA was
studied. Studies outside of the European Union, and those not written in English and those with
unsuitable subjects were excluded from analysis.
Based on this systematic analysis, it can be concluded that DFA prevalence varies from 2.1%
to 12.1% in mentioned population. Obtained results are related exclusively to papers that studied
DFA on sample of children and adolescents (age 3–12) in the European Union, from 2014 till
present.
