Abstract

Onkološkim pacijentima kojima je dijagnosticirana maligna bolest često se uz kiruršku terapiju odreĎuje i kemoterapija i/ili radioterapija. Vrlo je česta pojava da se takvi pacijenti jave u ordinaciju dentalne medicine za vrijeme trajanja onkološke terapije ili nedovoljno rano da bi se mogli obaviti svi potrebni dentalni zahvati prije početka same terapije. Idealno je pacijenta u terapiju uvesti sa saniranom i pripremljenom usnom šupljinom i otkloniti sva potencijalna mjesta infekcije zbog komplikacija koje se mogu javiti radi narušenog imunološkog sustava i drugih obrambenih mehanizama koji mogu pogoršati već ionako loše pacijentovo stanje. Pacijenta treba upoznati s nuspojavama liječenja te mu objasniti kako ih prevenirati i kako se lakše nositi s njima. Naglasak je na vaţnosti odrţavanja oralne higijene, redovitim kontrolama, pridrţavanju uputa i svim mogućim negativnim posljedicama koje se mogu dogoditi ako se pacijenti ne pridrţavaju uputa. Cilj je educirati pacijente, ali i liječnike raznih specijalnosti o vaţnosti ranog javljanja pacijenta u ordinaciju dentalne medicine i motivirati ih u tom smjeru kako bi se neţeljene posljedice svele na minimum.

Abstract (english)

Patients diagnosed with a malignant disease often undergo radiotherapy or chemotherapy after surgery. It is very common for these patients to come to a dental clinic while undergoing oncological therapy, or come too late to carry out all the required dental procedures before starting therapy. Ideally, the patient should commence therapy with a sanitized and prepared oral cavity with all potential places of infection eliminated. This is done in order to prevent complications that might occur due to immunodeficiency and other defence mechanisms, which could exacerbate an already weakened patient’s condition. The patient should be acquainted with the side effects of treatment and explained how to prevent them and how to cope with them successfully. Emphasis should be given on the importance of maintaining oral hygiene, having regular check-ups, following instructions and all possible negative consequences that may occur if these instructions are not followed. In order to minimize unwanted consequences, it is of utmost importance to properly educate and motivate both patients and different medical specialists.
