Abstract

Namjera ove eksperimentalne studije bila je utvrditi prevalenciju ozljeda stomatognatog sustava u kontaktnim sportovima. Provedeno je komparativno istraživanje u kojem se uzorak sastojao od članova Hrvatske boksačke reprezentacije. Čimbenici od interesa u ovom istraživanju obuhvaćali su: ozljede stomatognatog sustava, probleme i navike pri nošenju zaštitnih sportskih udlaga i informiranost sportaša i trenera o važnosti prevencije ozljeda orofacijalne regije. Metodom ankete, u kojoj ispitivači nisu bili obaviješteni o parametrima koji se ispituju, ispitano je 43 ispitanika koji su članovi amaterske i profesionalne boksačke lige registrirane pri Hrvatskom olimpijskom odboru. Svi ispitanici bili su informirani o namjerama i postupcima u istraživanju te su potpisali i valjani pristanak za sudjelovanje u istraživanju. 70% ispitanika nosilo je zaštitne „boil & bite“ udlage prije pristupanja našem istraživanju. Ispitanici su nasumično metodom slučajnog odabira podijeljeni u dvije skupine od kojih je u 21 slučaju izrađena nova zaštitna udlaga, vakuum metodom termoformiranih folija tvrtke Erkodent po specifikaciji za udlagu Playsafe Heavy. U preostalim slučajevima izrađena je konfekcijska boil & bite udlaga prema uputstvu proizvođača – tvrtke Myofunctional Research Europe BW. Obje skupine uspoređene su s obzirom na čimbenike koji utječu na stabilnost, poteškoće u nošenju i
mogućnosti prevencije ozljeda te je utvrđena razlika između navedenih skupina (p<0.05). Uvidjeli smo da je razina informiranosti među sportašima i liječnicima stomatolozima o važnosti zaštitnih udlaga u sportu niska i da su potrebna daljnja istraživanja o toj problematici te sustavna popularizacija metoda zaštita orofacijalne regije pri sportskim aktivnostima.

Abstract (english)

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the type and prevalence of dental injuries in contact sports. The aim of this work was to conduct a comparative experimental study between data in Croatian boxing representation and other studies. We wanted to identify frequency of dental injuries, habits of wearing mouth guards, as well as general level of information (coaches, players) about measures of protection in contact sports. For this, using questionnaires, 43 boxers belonging to the amateurs and professional leagues were surveyed. All examinees have been informed and consented to principles involved in this investigation. A total of 43 individuals were males and 70% previously wore a boil & bite type of mouth guards. In this study we made a laboratory custom made laminated mouth guards for 21 boxers by vacuum forming technique using Erkoform – RVE machine under a two layer Playsafe specification and for 22 of them prefabricated mouthguards (1 layer) were made. This two groups were compared on base of mouthguard efficiency in prevention of dental injuries. Results revealed a high rate of dental trauma in boxers which was better protected by laminated custom made mouth guards in comparison with prefabricated mouth guards (p<0.05). Our conclusion was that there is need for more information and education and placing significance into wearing a quality mouthguard. There is a need to inform public, dentists and sportsmen that the world of sport dentistry is developing as a new branch that continues to grow and is gaining a scientific maturity.
