Abstract

Kemoterapija je način onkološkog liječenja zloćudnih bolesti. Cilj terapije je smanjiti veličinu
raka, zaustaviti progresiju zloćudne bolesti ili smanjiti veličinu tumora kako bi se moglo
provesti kirurško liječenje. Kemoterapija se može koristiti kao samostalno liječenje raka ili u
kombinaciji s nekim drugim metodama poput radioterapije ili kirurške resekcije tumora.
Najpoznatija skupina lijekova koji se koriste u kemoterapiji su citostatici. Njihovo djelovanje
je neselektivno na stanice kako tumora tako i organizma te se zbog toga javljaju neizbježne
nuspojave.
S obzirom da je u Republici Hrvatskoj, a i u svijetu, zabilježen kontinuiran porast zloćudnih
bolesti, doktor dentalne medicine će se u svom radu susretati sa bolesnicima koji su u tijeku
kemoterapije ili se nalaze na početku, odnosno na kraju terapijskog ciklusa. Stoga svaki
doktor dentalne medicine mora znati utjecaj kemoterapijskog liječenja na oralnu šupljinu te
po potrebi prevenirati moguće komplikacije koje bi se mogle razviti u tijeku liječenja.

Abstract (english)

Chemotherapy is a method of oncological treatment of malignant diseases. The aim of therapy
is to reduce the size of the cancer, stop the progression of the malignant disease or reduce the
size of the tumor, so that surgical treatment is possible. Chemotherapy can be used as a standalone cancer treatment or in combination with other methods, such as radiotherapy or surgical
tumor resection. The most well-known group of drugs in chemotherapy are cytostatics. Their
effect is not selective on the cells of the tumor and the organism, whereby inevitable side
effects occur.
Given the fact that there is a continuous increase in malignant diseases in the Republic of
Croatia and in the world, the dentist will meet patients during his work who are undergoing
chemotherapy or are at the beginning or end of the therapy cycle. Therefore, every dentist
must know the effects of chemotherapy on the oral cavity and, if necessary, prevent possible
complications that could occur during the treatment
