Abstract

Ceramics is a material widely used in dentistry nowadays. In fixed prosthodontics it is indi-cated for many types of restorations including veneers, inlays, onlays, overlays, single crowns and fixed partial dentures in both anterior and posterior region of both jaws. Ceramics are a two-phase material that contain an amorphous (glassy) phase which is responsible for their great optical properties and a crystalline phase which is responsible for their good mechanical properties. Many different types of ceramic material are available today such as feldspathic ceramic, glass ceramics, infiltrated ceramics and oxide ceramics and all of them have different indications and production techniques. Best optical properties appertain to feldspathic and glass ceramics and due to this they are used in the anterior region where it is necessary to have good aesthetical properties in the sense of mimicking the appearance of the natural tooth while in the posterior region, where high occlusal forces are present, oxide ceramics have found their use. Novel materials such as hybrid ceramics have yet to display their wider use in dentistry. Different production techniques are available, such as veneering of ceramics, sintering, heat-pressing, slip-casting or CAD/CAM machining.

Abstract (croatian)

Dentalna keramika je materijal koji se danas široko koristi u stomatologiji. U fiksnoj protetici indiciran je za mnoge vrste nadomjestaka, uključujući ljuskice, inleje, onleje, overleje , pojedinačne krunice te mostove u prednjoj i stražnjoj regiji obiju čeljusti. Keramika je dvofazni materijal koji sadrži amorfnu (staklastu) fazu koja je odgovorna za njihova odlična optička svojstva i kristalnu fazu koja je odgovorna za njihova dobra mehanička svojstva. Danas su dostupne mnoge različite vrste keramičkih materijala kao što su feldspatična keramika, staklo-keramika, infiltrirana keramika i oksidna keramika, a sve one posjeduju različite indikacije i proizvodne tehnike. Najbolja optička svojstva imaju feldspatične i staklo-keramike i zbog toga se koriste u prednjoj regiji gdje su potrebna izvrsna estetska svojstva u smislu oponašanja izgleda prirodnog zuba dok je u stražnjoj regiji oksidna keramika našla je svoju primjenu zbog činjenice da su tamo pristune znatno veće okluzijske sile. Novi materijali kao što su hibridne keramike tek trebaju dokazati svoju širu upotrebu u stomatologiji. Dostupne su različite proizvodne tehnike poput fasetiranja keramike, sinteriranja, toplinskog prešanja, infiltracije ili pomoću CAD/CAM obrade.
