Abstract

Produljenjem životnog vijeka suočavamo se s brojnim novim problemima koje starost i starenje
populacije donosi. Povećanje udjela starije populacije potaknulo je ubrzan profesionalni i
znanstveni interes za područje gerontologije. Utjecaj genetike i okoliša na ubrzano starenje postaju
predmet brojnih novih istraživanja. Koncept „inflammaging”, koji označava kroničnu upalu
slabijeg intenziteta i imunosenescenciju, odnosno progresivno slabljenje imunosnog sustava, u
centru je brojnih istraživanja kroničnih bolesti vezanih uz stariju životnu dob. Jedno od najčešćih
kroničnih upalnih stanja ljudskog organizma jest i parodontitis. Parodontitis je upala potpornog
aparata zuba, a uzrokovan je primarno patogenim bakterijskim biofilmom koji izaziva kronični
upalni odgovor, a on dovodi do destrukcije navedenih tkiva. Prisutnost kronične upale u organizmu
može utjecati na modifikaciju imunosnog odgovora i uzrokovati njegovo ubrzano starenje koje
dovodi do drugih sustavnih upalnih kroničnih stanja te posljedično do slabljenja i starenja
organizma, tzv. krhkosti. Promicanjem zdravijih životnih navika i, između ostalog, promocijom
oralnog zdravlja i njegove važnosti, moguće je usporiti starenje te utjecati na produljenje kvalitete
života koja postaje sve veći prioritet društva koje stari.

Abstract (english)

By prolonging life expectancy, we are facing new challenges that age and aging population bring.
The increase in the share of the elderly population has spurred accelerated professional and
scientific interest in the field of gerontology. The impact of genetics and the environment on
accelerated aging is becoming the interest of numerous new studies. The concept of inflammaging
or chronic inflammation of lower intensity and immunosenscence or progressive weakening of the
immune system is now set in the center of studies of chronic age – related diseases. One of the
most common chronic inflammatory conditions in the body is periodontal disease or periodontitis.
Periodontitis is an inflammation of the supporting tissue of the tooth that affects the soft tissue,
periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, and is caused by the present bacterial pathogenic biofilm
that triggers a chronic inflammatory response that leads to destruction of these tissues. The
presence of chronic inflammation in the body can affect the modification of the immune response
and cause its accelerated aging, which leads to various other inflammatory and chronic conditions
that lead to weakening and aging of the body, the so-called frailty. By promoting healthy living
habits and also promotion of oral health it is possible to slow down aging and influence the quality
of life that is becoming an increasing priority of an aging society.
