Abstract

Uvod i cilj rada: Oralni karcinom vrlo je opasna zloćudna bolest s visokom stopom smrtnosti, čemu je najveći uzrok njegovo kasno prepoznavanje. On u najranijoj fazi ne daje nikakve simptome te zbog toga dugo ostaje nezamijećen. Upravo zato
potrebno je staviti naglasak na adekvatnu edukaciju zdravstvenih djelatnika o ovoj temi te o važnosti provođenja preventivnih pregleda u svrhu ranog otkrivanja oralnog karcinoma.
Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je utvrditi količinu znanja o oralnom karcinomu te ujedno podići svijest o toj podmukloj bolesti među ispitanicima. Ispitanici i postupci: U ovom radu provedeno je istraživanje metodom online upitnika u kojem je dobrovoljno sudjelovalo 140 studenata dentalne medicine, 105 studenata medicine, 159 doktora dentalne medicine i 100 doktora medicine. Anketni upitnik kreiran za potrebe ovog istraživanja sastojao se od 29 pitanja. U prvom dijelu upitnika prikupljeni su opći podaci o ispitaniku, a u drugom dijelu znanje i stavovi o oralnom karcinomu.
Rezultati: Znanje ispitanika o oralnom karcinomu i dalje nije zadovoljavajuće. Najbolje su znanje pokazali studenti stomatologije, a najlošije doktori medicine.
Zaključak: Potrebna je dodatna edukacija stomatologa i doktora medicine kako bi u budućnosti preventivni pregledi usne šupljine postali dijelom svakodnevne kliničke prakse čime bi se stavio naglasak na prevenciju, ali i ubrzalo postavljanje dijagnoze
oralnog karcinoma i time spasili životi brojnih pacijenata.

Abstract (english)

Introduction and objective : Oral cancer is a very dangerous malignant disease with high mortality rate, which is the result of its late recognition. Because there are no symptoms in the earliest stages of oral cancer, it remains unrecognized for a long
period of time. Therefore, the education of healthcare workers about preventive oral examinations is very important.
The aim of this research was to assess the level of participants' oral cancer knowledge, as well as to raise awareness about this dangerous disease.
Materials and Methods : In this paper, a study has been carried out using an online questionnaire method. We collected answers from four participant groups, namely 140 dental medicine students, 105 medicine students, 159 doctors of dental medicine and 100 medical doctors. The questionnaire was designed solely for the purpouse of this study and consisted of 29 questions. In the first part of the questionnaire there were general questions about the participants, whereas the questions in the second part of the survey addressed their knowledge and attitudes towards oral cancer.
Results : Knowledge of oral cancer among the participants is still unsatisfactury. The participant group that scored the highest was dental medicine students, while medical doctors showed the least knowledge.
Conclusion : We are in need of additional education about oral cancer for doctors of dental medicine and medical doctors. This way we can focus on preventing rather than curing oral cancer, reaching early diagnoses and thus save the lives of many.
