Abstract

Periodontitis is one of the leading causes of tooth loss and in consequence the loss of dental function and aesthetics. The contemporary treatment guidelines involve mechanical debridement as well as antimicrobial therapy in selected cases, which unfortunately may result in harmful side effects. Due to increased interest in alternative approaches over the past decades, the use of probiotics as an adjunct in treating not only periodontal but also peri-implant pathologies gained popularity based on the theory that, if probiotics can benefit gastrointestinal health by modulating the gut microbiome, it may also be possible to use certain probiotic strains to modulate the complex oral microbiome, and therefore the microbiome of the periodontal pockets. This review aims to investigate and compare the studies that were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of probiotics in periodontal and peri-implant pathologies. By summarizing the information gained through evaluation of the studies, a possible outlook for the future of probiotics as well as the observed challenges and limitations of this therapeutic approach are discussed.

Abstract (croatian)

Parodontitis je jedan od vodećih uzroka gubitka zubi što posljedično dovodi do narušavanja oralnih funkcija i estetike. Suvremene smjernice liječenja uključuju mehaničko čišćenje te u pojedinim slučajevima i antimikrobnu terapiju koja, nažalost, ponekad ima nuspojave. Zbog sve većeg interesa posljednjih desetljeća za alternativne terapijske pristupe, upotreba probiotika kao dodatka u liječenju, ne samo parodontnih nego i periimplantatnih patologija stekla je popularnost na temelju teorije da ako probiotici mogu koristiti zdravlju probavnog sustava moduliranjem crijevnog mikrobioma, moguće je koristiti određene sojeve probiotika i za moduliranje složenog oralnog mikrobioma, a time i mikrobioma parodontnih džepova. Ovome je radu cilj istražiti i usporediti istraživanja koja su provedena u svrhu procjene učinkovitosti probiotika u liječenju parodontnih i periimplantatnih patologija. Sintezom informacija dobivenih kroz evaluaciju dostupnih znanstvenih dokaza, razmatra moguće terapijske izglede za budućnost, kao i uočene izazove i ograničenja ovog terapijskog pristupa.
